Space Shuttle Challenger Tragedy is most terrible

The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occurred on January 28, 1986, is the first US space disaster which actually resulted in multiple fatalities, including that of a civilian. The entire space shuttle was destroyed in 73 seconds post liftoff killing the entire crew on the spot. When surveying and analyzing the cause of this disaster it all came down to impressive as small as a faulty O-Ring seal.

It basically allowed hot gases from the rocket inoculation to weaken the outside propellant tank and eventually the strut that held the booster in its place to the tank and caused the whole thing to fail and crumble. As a result of the disaster, the Air Force decided to cancel its plans to use the Shuttle for confidential military satellite launches from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, deciding to use the Titan IV in its place.

Mount St. Helens in Washington: Explosion

One last earthquake turned the sleeping huge loose, and soon 230 sq. mi. of green forest was entombed in a lunar wasteland.  On May 18, 1980, U.S. Geological review volcanologist David Johnston had a clear view of Mount St. Helens’s north side from his monitoring station 5.5 miles away. Just seconds after the 30-year-old radioed his final words to colleagues, the snow-capped volcano blew itself enormously apart.

The mountain had been calm until two months earlier, when a quake jolted the resting giant to life. With no a cap of earth to keep it sealed under pressure, Mount St. Helens exploded. Sulfur dioxide gas in the recently exposed magma, together with compressed water and steam, extended and blew out the north side of the mount. This lateral blast of ash, magma, rocks and sand reached 100 stories high and spread 10 miles extensive as it plowed down valleys and over ridges at speeds near 700 mph.

It was this lateral blast, or surge, as some geologists prefer to call it, which claimed most of the 57 fatalities that day with Johnston. Neither he nor his trailer was ever found, both presumably hurtled into the next vale and buried in wreckage.

Charkhi Dadri mid Air Collision – November 12, 1996

A mid-air collision between a Kazakhstan flight and a Saudi flight, over Haryana in India, resulted in the world’s deadliest mid-air crash. It was responsible for the deaths of passengers and crew on both planes. The resultant safety measures made air corridors in the skies mandatory. The aircraft involved were Saudi Arabian Airlines Flight 763 (SVA763), a Boeing 747-168B en route from New Delhi to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and Kazakhstan Airlines Flight 1907, an Ilyushin Il-76TD en route from Shymkent, Kazakhstan, to New Delhi.

The Charkhi Dadri mid-air collision occurred on 12 November 1996 over the village of Charkhi Dadri, to the west of New Delhi, India. All 349 people on board both flights were killed, making it the world's deadliest mid-air collision and the third-deadliest aircraft accident in the history of aviation, behind only Japan Airlines Flight 123 and the Tenerife airport disaster.

The crash was investigated by the Lahoti Commission, headed by then-Delhi High Court judge Ramesh Chandra Lahoti. Depositions were taken from the Air Traffic Controllers Guild and the two airlines. The flight data recorders were decoded by Kazakhstani Airlines and Saudia under supervision of air crash investigators in Moscow and Farnborough, Hampshire, England, respectively.

World Trade Centre Hit – September 11, 2001

The deadliest of all crashes ever, this conscious crashing of two planes into the World Trade Centre killed 2988 people, the majority of them being occupants of the twin towers of the World Trade Centre. This was an act of terrorism, and has no parallels in the annals of airplane crashes.

On the morning of September 11th, terrorists hijacked four commercial jet planes and attempted to fly them into numerous U.S. targets. One of the planes, American Airlines Flight 11, crashed into Tower One of the World Trade Center at 8:50 AM.

The people of America hooped together in the weeks following the September 11th attacks like few other times in American history. People responded with donations of blood, effort and money.

President George W Bush immediately called for all civilized nations to band together and fight violence. The military of the United States mobilized for war in an operation code named Enduring Freedom.

The Worst Yellow River Flood in China

The 1887 Yellow River flood was an overwhelming flood on the Yellow River in China. This river is prone to flooding due to the elevated nature of the river, running between dykes above the broad plains surrounding it. The flood that began in September 1887 stated the area, killing some 900,000 people. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters ever recorded.
For centuries, the farmers living near the Yellow River had built dikes to contain the rising waters, caused by silt accumulation on the riverbed. In 1887, this rising riverbed, coupled with days of heavy rain, overcame the dikes on around 28th September, causing a massive flood. After the flood, two million were left homeless. The resulting pandemic and lack of basic essentials claimed as many lives as those lost directly by the flood itself. It was one of the worst floods in history, though the later 1931 Yellow River flood may have killed as many as four million.

The Deadliest Earthquake in the Twentieth Century: Tangshan

On July 28, 1976, a scale 7.8 earthquake hit the sleeping city of Tangshan, in northeastern China. The very large quake, striking an area where it was totally astonishing, obliterated the city of Tangshan and killed over 240,000 people - making it the deadliest earthquake of the twentieth century.

Though systematic earthquake prediction is in its promising stages, nature often gives some advance warning of an imminent earthquake.

In a village outer of Tangshan, well water apparently rose and fell three times the day before the earthquake.

Animals also gave a caution that something was about to occur. One thousand chickens in Baiguantuan refused to eat and ran around excitedly cheeping. Mice and yellow weasels were seen running around looking for a lay to hide. In one home in the city of Tangshan, a goldfish began jumping violently in its bowl.

When the 7.8 scale earthquake struck Tangshan at 3:42 a.m. on July 28, more than a million people lay sleeping, unconscious of the disaster that was to happen them.

When the earth began to shake, a few people who were awake had the foresight to dive under a table or other heavy piece of furniture, but most were sleeping and did not have time. The whole earthquake lasted around 14 to 16 seconds.
