The two airplanes passed so close to each other that the captain of one immediately declared over the radio: "We just heard the guy go by."
In early morning clouds, a US Airways Airbus 320 and a small cargo plane flew within 50 to 100 feet of each other, barely avoiding a collision over 2 busy highways bordered by south Minneapolis neighborhoods, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said Thursday.
It is the latest in a series of incidents that have drawn the attention of federal aviation officials.
The near-disaster happened Sept. 16 after the 2 planes took off on parallel runways at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. The US Airways plane carrying 95 people was headed to Philadelphia and a Beech 99 cargo plane operated by Bemidji Aviation Services was bound for La Crosse, Wis., the NTSB said.
