In the Democratic Republic of Congo about 270 passengers aboard 2 separate river boats met with tragedy this weekend.
On Sunday a boat carrying more than 100 people sank after hitting a rock in the country's northwest Equateur Province.
Only about 15 people are estimated to have survived.
And on Saturday night in Kasai-Occidental Province a boat caught on fire and capsized with an unknown number of people missing.
According to the ship's owner employees sparked the fire after spilling fuel onto the battery while trying to fill the tank.
Congo's large system of river networks is often preferred as transportation routes over the country's underdeveloped roads.
However, critics charge that boats are often overfilled and unregulated.
