THIS appears to be the rainiest year in decades. There was no August break and it has rained almost every day since the rainy season began. Roads have been washed away and vehicles badly damaged.
SEPTEMBER has been the cruellest month. The rain has poured in sheets. In some places the rain was accompanied by spearing storms. The storms buckled buildings and rifled roofs. A storm which heralded rain surged through the Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State on Sept. 13. The storm destroyed buildings and the rain crushed and swept away crops.
WHAT happened at Egbeda was a tame affair compared with the situation in the Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State after the deluge of Sept. 14. The rain-bearing storm that swept through the Egbeda area destroyed buildings and crops, but the floods in Oluyole were fatal. 12 people reportedly drowned in the floodwater. A bridge collapsed and there was traffic chaos in many parts of the city.
FLOODS brought great sorrow to the people of Sokoto and Kebbi states. 48 people were said to have died in Sokoto State and many others could not immediately be accounted for. Some of the dead were babies, their mothers’ backs, to which they were strapped, proving to be a grossly inadequate safe haven.
